GA Trends Statistics
Executive Summary

The third quarter of 2006 saw mixed results in terms of flight activity, pilot certification, aircraft shipments, and registration applications. All comparisons are based on quarterly comparisons from 2005 to 2006.

Measures of flight activity showed mixed results as compared to the previous year. Center activity as well as tower activity were down slightly as compared to last year´s figures. Total gallons of avgas sold were down when compared to last year´s third-quarter numbers by 6 percent.

Trends in certificate issuances varied by certificate level. In 2006 student issuances were down (26 percent), while private issuances were down marginally (1 percent). Increases were seen in commercial issuances (up 16 percent), ATP issuances (up 4 percent), CFI issuances (up 2 percent), and instrument ratings (up 13 percent).

Aircraft shipments and registration applications were ahead of last year´s figures. A comparison of total U.S. shipments shows 2006 figures to be ahead of 2005 figures by 12 percent. Aircraft registration applications appear to be up slightly when compared to 2005 data (up 2 percent).

Generally, accident rates are indirectly related to levels of flight activity. Accidents were down 40 percent as compared to the third quarter of 2005.
